Patients often present at my clinic with dentures that started off fitting well and slowly got worse in their ability to function well under normal usage. This is often the result of bone resorption in the jaw.
Our bones are constantly changing on a molecular level and bone remodelling happens naturally in order to maintain bone strength.
Instead of getting new dentures made, which can be costly, the patient can benefit from a denture reline. At a fraction of the cost, a reline is the adjustment of the denture plate that comes into contact with the gums and palate. The patient has a choice of 2 broad material types – hard and soft.
A soft reline is made from squeezable silicone material that is most suitable for patients with sensitive gums. Although not as durable as the hard option, the soft reline beds in quicker and eases the symptoms of ill-fitting dentures.
A hard reline is made from the acrylic resin which your original denture was made from and it’s benefits include durability and function. A hard reline will make your dentures feel as they were when they were first fitted and will certainly last longer than the soft option. If you present to me with sores from your ill fitting dentures I will most likely give you a soft reline, letting your sores heal and then replace with the hard option.
We look forward to speaking to you about how relining your old dentures can help you with restoring the functionality you expect from your dentures. Call us on 01- 8359296 to book your free consultation.
